Chilean Taekwondo Federation Left Without Leadership After Election Suspension

The Chilean Taekwondo Federation is currently without official leadership after its board’s term expired in October 2025 and court action suspended new elections, leaving the organization in an institutional vacuum.

Board Term Expired and Court Halted New Elections

SANTIAGO, Chile — The Chilean Taekwondo Federation is currently facing a significant institutional crisis after the term of its board expired on October 16, 2025, and the election process intended to appoint new leadership was suspended by court order. As a result, the federation has been left without officially renewed authorities or formal representation.

Judicial documents related to the dispute confirm this leadership vacuum. In one of the legal proceedings, Flavio Figueroa Veloso appeared as the Federation’s former president, stating that the term for which he had been elected ended on October 16, 2025. He clarified that he was participating in the legal process because he had led the last board and was effectively the organization’s last judicial and extrajudicial representative.

Court Order Stopped the Electoral Process

The electoral process was halted by the Puerto Montt Court of Appeals on October 23, 2025. The court issued a stay of proceedings that suspended the election scheduled for October 26, preventing the appointment of new leadership.

Since then, the federation has remained entangled in legal appeals, internal disputes, and unresolved challenges, which have stalled the leadership renewal process.

Suspensions of Member Associations Added to the Conflict

The broader conflict also involved suspensions imposed on several affiliated associations during the election period. Legal case files show that multiple organizations contested being suspended again in September 2025, even though some had already faced earlier disciplinary actions.

Chile’s National Sports Institute (IND) later stated that, according to the regulations governing sports organizations, suspensions should last a maximum of two months, not three months as the federation had imposed in this case.

Even under the most favorable interpretation of the federation’s actions, these suspensions were temporary and tied to deadlines that have already passed. As a result, the main issue is no longer whether those associations remain suspended, but rather the federation’s failure to establish a new governing authority after the board’s mandate expired.

Electoral Commission Dispute Deepened Institutional Crisis

The controversy also extended to the internal electoral structure. Appeals argued that the Electoral Commission had requested the board to convene an extraordinary assembly to resolve appeals from suspended associations and clarify the eligible membership roster.

However, the board reportedly bypassed this request and directed that the issue be handled by the Ethics Committee instead of the assembly. This decision was challenged in court, and one ruling concluded that the board’s decision was illegal, stating that it had failed to fulfill its obligation to convene the assembly.

The dispute further complicated the question of who held legitimate authority to oversee the federation’s transition to new leadership.

Complaints Filed With the National Sports Institute

A later complaint submitted to the National Sports Institute (IND) stated explicitly that the federation currently has no active Board of Directors, as elections remain suspended due to ongoing legal protections and injunctions.

The same document also raised allegations concerning financial and banking activities after the expiration of the board’s term. However, these accusations remain part of the complaint process and have not been confirmed through a final court ruling.

Federation Faces Institutional Vacuum

The situation leaves the Chilean Taekwondo Federation without officially elected leadership or a renewed governing structure. Since October 16, 2025, the organization has operated in a state of institutional uncertainty, with no new board formally installed.

In practice, this means the federation’s activities have been carried out only through the actions of former officials, administrative personnel, or temporary arrangements, all of which remain subject to legal scrutiny.

A Rare Governance Crisis in National Sport

From both a sporting and political standpoint, the Chilean case represents one of the most serious governance challenges a national sports federation can face. With elections suspended, internal disputes unresolved, and legal battles ongoing, the organization has been left without renewed leadership and without a clear institutional path forward.

The documents reviewed ultimately point to the same conclusion: the Chilean Taekwondo Federation remains without officially renewed authorities, while the legal conflict surrounding its electoral process continues to prevent the restoration of stable governance.
